File Splitting Problems At 4gb Help Please

Hi I have recently bought a new PC and the old one has XP and the new has Vista Premium. I have them both wire connected to my router and I have transferred over my files to my new one but I have a couple of huge video files I wanted to transfer and they wouldn't so I found that it was something to do with a 4GB limit with Vista and the 32bit version. The the first file I tried is just over 10GB.

Therefore I went looking for file splitters of which there are a few and I have tried them. They work great at splitting but I keep hitting problems at just over or around the 4GB mark. I have split the original file by creating the split files in the new PC ready to assemble as there is not much room in the original PC to make a split version of the original along side the original.

This part works fine but when I then only use the new PC it seems to work until it gets to about the 4Gb mark and then comes up with a fault or closes depending on the software I am trying.

I started off using GSplit3 which seemed great software and it joined the files perfectly the first time but I accidently put the file in the wrong place on the new PC. I tried to move the 10GB next from its wrong location on the new PC but it would not let me, I presume because of this Vista 32bit 4GB limit, so I deleted it and thought no problem I will just do it again but it has never worked since and gives error code 112 not enough room which is a joke as I have a 1TB drive. This is the only software that gives this error code but they all stop working at about 4GB during the join process.

But if it worked once why now will none of them work?

I even downloaded regcure after reading up on the net but that has not helped.

Am I missing something about the 4GB limit and if so why did it do it once?

Any help would really be appreciated

Use winrar and compress the file into smaller sections

4GB limit is because you are using fat32 if you use NTFS is much more

You can convert fat32 to NTFS with specially software is far more efficient than fat32 and suppose to better are indexing files so easy to get to

^ with BG, use winrar to split the file into 100mb chunks, turn compression either off or very low

The 4gb limit in Vista 32 bit is for the amount of Ram it will recognise, this has nothing to do with the size of files it will accept.

Fat32 drives will have a 4gb file limit but it's not likely your Vista drive will be Fat32 ?

Hi yes the limit is supposed to be the ram after all I had these huge 10GB files on my old pc with XP and as I said briefly on my new Vista PC which comes with Vista 32 bit so why do I seem to have a 4Gb limit on my files now?

So have you actually checked the file system on this drive partition that you are trying to copy to?

What do you mean, I have checked there is room if thats what you mean and there is tons 762GB free of 911GB?

    Drive is split/partitioned in 2 C: and D: and D: is a small recovery drive I believe (8.6GB of 20GB used).

If you right-click the drive icon and select 'properties', you should see amongst other info, wheter it's 'FAT 32' or 'NTFS'. If it's FAT 32, than that's the problem, if it's NTFS, then I don't know. :)
  • There is no 4GB limit on files in Vista. Try disabling your AV software while you do the transfers and see what happens.

XP has a built in convertor, don't know if Vista does but in XP it runs from the command console and to say convert your D drive the command would be "convert d: /fs:ntfs" if your doing your C drive it requires a reboot.

Its says NTFS next to file system when you do that. What I was on about above is my new PC came with 2 windows versions 32 bit and 64 bit but the 32bit was pre-installed and after some research on here as well it seemed better for me to stick with the 32 bit for now and when you check the system it says 32-bit operating system. Hope I am making some sense and not talking jibberish.
