  • And there's the trouble.... what if you've no idea what you're interested in? Just lots of bits and pieces bobbing about through your mind idly occasionally?

Hmmm, I said this to someone the other day, not sure if you were there, but the local careers office will have a computer programme where you type in your skills/interests and it comes up with a range of jobs suited to you. Never seen it, but I've been informed it's quite good.

Do they still bolt the chairs to the floor in there. If not they should consider it. They used to back in the day, it can only be worse in there nowadays surely.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

No. I was just feeling really bad at myself for thanking your post where you reported a moron, but not thanking his post. When in black/white, he was right and you were really wrong.

Yours was in humour, but he was right.

And I thanked yours because "you're my mate". Which is now causing me pain because I know that is wrong and immoral.

But I couldn't help it.... I could see the funny side of it all.

So I slapped my own wrist.
Ok I see. Well I typed the first bit of the post and then thought should I / dare I include a 'funny' comment on disabilities and racism. So I did. Was praying to Mecca funny? It wasn't meant to be. The funny part (to me) was getting up the nose of those who resent dole being payed to non ethnics.

I accept however that you do have a point. I will be ever more careful in my postings.

As for cliques - you are absolutely right. The longer I stay here the more thank yous I get. Not for my best posts but a sort of general oh its mewbie, he's a mate, lets thank him sort of thing. I did wonder about just changing usernames every few months - keep it fresh maybe. Plus I could repeat all the same jokes over again.

In the spirit of stopping cliqueyness ( I have no idea how its spelt) I have not thanked you for the above.

    Yours, as ever,

    mewbie.

edit: actually I have thanked you..cos your my mate.

I had found out about a careers service and had phoned them, but they couldn't see me for 2 weeks and it was poor timing/I couldn't have made an appointment. Also, they didn't fill me with confidence they could do anything.

I've never had any form of careers counselling, I think it's something everybody should have access to... or maybe they have had and I just never found it before.

You can't just get a job with them. Most jobs I could do need some previous civil servant experience.

My friend linked me into NHS jobs earlier, I pointed out to her that every job I COULD do I wouldn't get because they said they wanted NHS experience, or were on a grade that implied there were probably already 1000 other staff on a lower grade, who might also be applying and would therefore score more "done it/been there" points.

Unless you start at the bottom in those sort of Govt jobs it's difficult to progress. It's certainly hard to enter in your twilight years in a middle grade job. Everybody competing will already have the "experience of working with partnerships and similar agencies" and fundraising groups etc that most of those jobs have as a pre-requisite.

    HAVE YOU TRIED?

    Don't try you don't get.

Well, listen, from what I've known of you so far, you seem a grounded, knowledgeable, sensible person. Have you thought about some sort of advisory work, life skills, etc?

It's something that's not age-restricted, in fact age is a plus, in my view.
