Have you checked your pc is set to boot from CD if one is inserted, it may be that it's not looking there for a boot disc ?

When it's starting up you will see something like press delete to enter setup to get into the bios

As soon as you restart the pc you need to keep pressing the delete key until it enters the bios unless your pc is telling you to press a different key ?

As soon as it starts to boot up it should tell you which key to press to enter setup, it won't always be the delete key.

If not, do you know which motherboard you have or do you have the motherboard manual ?

Edit: looks like compaq may use the F10 key instead of delete, try that

    Try F1.
When you get into the BIOS look for the Boot priority/order options and ensure the CD drive is ahead of the hard disk. Once you've done this, it should start from the CD although you sometimes get asked to press a key on the keyboard to confirm you want it to do that.
    Good luck.

Yes, if you make cd rom first it will look their first, if there's no disc in the drive it will just boot as normal.

Did you make the harddrive the second boot device?
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
