  • Subway has some awesome pricing....

a 6" Ham Subway sandwich for 1.49. Add a cookie and a drink for 2.49.

You can also get the sub of the day for 1.99, which is an on-going special. Today was a 6" meatball subway sandwich.

If you're really feeling the pinch and you don't like their meats, you can get a Veggie Delight for extremely cheap and add your own meat. The 6" is 2.20 and the footlong is about 3.50.

  • i don't like sandwiches much so when i'm being good, i make a big salad in a tupperware bowl - i start with the salad dressing (oil, vinegar, herbs, mustard, garlic, honey) and then add chopped veg (carrots, peppers, cucumber, cabbage, apples, etc), plus tinned beans or smoked fish - whatever i've got, basically. Two things make it surprisingly tasty - first, aim for a mix of textures (crunchy, juicy, soft). Second, use organic / local / fresh veg as far as possible. I find this uses up veg that gets chucked away otherwise so the cost is very little - plus it adds up to at least 2 or 3 portions of my 5 a day!

  • My works has a freezer section in the fridge which is never used.

Can anyone recommend from Iceland etc. the most healthiest of the £1 frozen meals for 1. Say the healthiest 10. This would reduce lunch too £5 per week and give variety.

Not every day are people able to prepare lunch the night before or have time for a proper lunch everyday so a quick healthy £1 frozen meal for 1 would help.

  • If you can be bothered to make it from scratch, it's even cheaper. Never heard of porridge in sachets, but a big box of branded (eg Scotts or Quaker) oats are under £2, so a non branded one would be even cheaper. You can add fruit, nuts, spices, honey, sugar, jam, all sorts.

Branded? I use tesco value oats, and these come out fine every time for a fraction of either! Then add honey or dried fruits. The sachet oats cant even as good for you as they have got so many other bits added in the form of emusifiers etc, though these are easy to keep in bag to do at work in microwave

    Hi MylesBetter,

What about asdas 5 for £4 frozen meals. I must admit I rarely eat them, but they do the Good for You versions too.

Or, even cheaper, the value meals (both fresh and frozen).
    Looking forward to the future.

If you fancy something hot in work and DON'T have a microwave...

Put ordinary dried pasta in a stainless steel thermos, fill with boiling water, put the lids back on and leave for 10 - 20 mins (spaghetti is the quickest, spirals the slowest) and you have hot cooked pasta!
Just stir in pesto, or butter and black pepper, or grated cheese and paprika...

Told this tip by a digger driver - even construction sites have an office with a kettle in!

Actually good for energy saving at home as well, especially if the kettle is going on anyway!

  • On the subject of sell-by dates; at Sainsbury's in Rustington and Worthing, ready made packet meals that are due to go out-of-date are moved on their last day to another section of the chilled food area. They can be anything up to half price and so long as you get them in your freezer pdq they are OK.
  • I buy a pack of tortilla wraps - usually around £1.20 for 6/8

A pack of ham/turkey etc from the deli - bought a pack from Asda last week dated to Monday 19th for £2 - this had about 16 slices in.

I place the turkey on the bottom of the wrap - no butter - I don't find that you need it.

Grate some cheese over - I have also been using some smoked sausage in to the wrap and I top with Chipottle tabasco for a kick.

Wrap the whole thing up - I fold over the top and bottom to stop the filling falling out.....

I reckon this probably costs less than a quid a day? I also have a bag of LF crisps with them or even some Marmite breadsticks (increases the cost of course) and I am happy at that until tea time.

You can vary the fillings and the wraps do keep in the fridge all week.
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
