Are you trying to dial-up and connect to your ISP? If so, the problem might just be at your ISP's end and their system is not accepting the connection for some reason. Has the problem just recently occurred and you haven't changed anything on your computer (apart from reinstalling the modem)?
Your ISP might provide an alternative dial-up number, or you could try registering with another 0845 dial-up ISP and using that to test the above theory.

Stevemcb i have had similar problem lately where i kept loosing connectin for no reason, understand you`r frustrations, well it took me a while to get all my settings back still dont know how they where lost, anway what i had to do was go round to my brother-inlaws and write down all the internet settings on his computer and added them to mine as he runs windows xp as well, that did not work on it`s own i then loaded as suggested a bt pay as you go disc , well that sort of worked but not that well as the home page did not load fully, the last straw was to go through msn to connect to the net to find a isp,in my case it was wannado, singed up to wannado payg then re started computer an hey my broadband is back better than ever deleted the bt& wannadoo payg set ups and my computer is fine hope this helps.0
