DVD Help needed for useless mum!

  • Thanks all - we have got somewhere! We sussed out the finalising process thank you for pointing that out so we can now record then play on our DVD player (a cheapie from Asda which is multi region)

But unfortunately the Venturer Portable one still doesn't recognise them. SO I tried the hack to make it also multi region & guess what? The remote control wasn't working as we'd never used it since we bought it in August. Assuming the batteries were dead I bought some new ones today & it still isn't working - so have just emailed Argos asking how we go about getting a replacement as I still have the receipt (amazingly) and it is guaranteed for 12 months.

    The saga continues.....

Also bought some non rewritable DVDs today but they were the wrong ones so will take them & swap them tomorrow.

Will also order some of the Ritec ones to play with and see how we get on with those. I can't see anywhere that says you can burn them at different speeds - the only options you have are to have High Quality (60 mins) Standard Quality (120 mins) and so on so am trying another recording at a lesser quality in case that is what you mean.

Ho hum - once we get there it will be great and I will have learned lots of new stuff about the technological age.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions this is a great forum!

    BD XXX :D
  • "DVD-RW can only be played back (on a normal DVD player)if the recording was finalised".
You should only do this to the disc if you never want to use it again, as the process makes the recording permanent. DVD-RW discs are re-usable - programmes can be recorded and deleted, whereas cheaper DVD+R discs can only be used once.

It may just be the way I am reading it, but I think the above is a little misleading as it is suggesting that DVD-RW media cannot be used again once 'finalised'. I don't think this is the case??? Yes, DVD+/-RW should be finalised, but this does not prevent the media being used again at a later date. At least - as far as I am aware. :)

The multi-region hack does seem to make the Venturer a bit more willing to accept different formats, but as pointed out above, the brands of media it will accept may still require a bit of trial and error.

    Best of luck !! ;D

''Firstly, burning is just another name for the process of writing to the DVD - you do not need to put the DVDs into the oven before use. ;)''
