Getting Wood Cut to Size

Afternoon everyone,

I am wondering if anyone can help? I have some odd shape doors in my property and i am wondering if it is possible to get wood cut to size at somewhere like Jewson or Travis Perkins?

I have the dimensions that i want, so i am hoping i can go to them and say i want this type of wood in this size please and they cut it for me there and then. Has anyone had this done and if so how much do they charge? Would they charge per sq metre?

Thanks,

Whenever i've bought wood from Beesley & Fyldes our local builers merchants they've just cut it for me, and not charged anything. B & Q will do a couple of free cuts then charge about 50p , but i think if you go when thet are'nt busy they will do more

  • Yeah, i was in B&Q and Homebase but they dont seem to do wood that is big enough. I am looking for a piece of wood that is about 200cm in length, 46cm in width and about 9cms thick and they dont even do any that comes close. It all seems to be beams and stakes, which is why i am thinking i am going to have to go to a timber merchant, unless i am being blind in B&Q and Homebase???

You will not get wood 46 cm wide and 9cm thick in a normal timber merchant.
Why do you want/need that size? Do you realise how heavy that would be?

My local B&Q dont cut wood they use to years ago, they said they dont do it for health and safety, I ended up cutting wood to get in car with a cheap saw I bought from there and di it in car park, granted it wasnt a door but maybe they have stopped this now

I've always found the small independent wood suppliers are the ones that will cut to order. (Have taken cutting lists in before now and come away with the real timber equivalent of a ready-to-assemble flat pack.)

Ring round the ones in yellow pages or try a Gibbs and Dandy partner / franchisee (?).
  • I work for a Jewson branch, we have a mill and reglarly cut to order, not all branches have a mill though.....
