I'm having problems with freezing and doing just about everything so I ran windows doctor and its saying

Custom controls library has changed windows system files

Description - Custom controld library
Module name - commctrl.dll version 10/9/1998

Then it says

Just as a try (this wont hurt if it doesn't work)................

Click Settings>control panel>add/remove programs>select Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. Click Add/remove (don't worry you are not uninstalling it). A box will appear. Click the middle selection 'Repair Internet Explorer', then click OK. Follow the prompts after this (I can't remember whether you have to do a restart when this ends.......it will tell you).

This may be worth a go at first.

    hi thanx

I tried that and it didnt really change anything but I noticed the message through dr watson thingy is there sometimes but nit others. It is really the freezing though thats messing me up at the mo I'm not sure what has caused it. It might be connected to a web update from macafee antivirus or the latest windows update. The pc did start on its own a couple of times but I can't rem exactly what I was doing but it was weird

I scanned for viruses and I've done all the spy bot and adaware I then tried to scan with another program to test it and avg cae up nothing ive uninstalled it again till my macafee runs out but I also tried to online scan through kaspersky and that shown up at least 2 viruses but kept crashing 3/4 of the way through so I've not been able to look into that further. Is kaspersky a reloiable antivirus as I think I rem trying them once before and they came up with loads of viruses that even norton didnt pick up and wasnt sure if they might be true or not
    Thanx

    OK............Now try this.

Click........Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Tools (at the top)>System File Checker (run this)

If it comes back with a problem for commctrl.dll (and can't repair/replace it). You may have to download another copy of this to replace it with. Run this first, then see if it helps.

yes.gif I'm with Rex on that.

This link will give you more detail on what exactly that .dll is......

    http://process.networktechs.com/commctrl.dll.php

If you have an active McAfee antivirus running I wouldn't also install a second antivius. For no matter how short a time. They are going to conflict.

If virsuses and/or other malware have already been identified on your PC then go through the frst 4 posts in this thread and take appropriate action if your problems still aren't fixed.....

Best of luck. Do let us know how you get on.

If you have windows 98, and the Mcafee 4.4.00 scan engine, that combination can drag the performance of your PC down to a crawl. Symptoms are a long startup time (5-10 minutes before you get control of the mouse), and the hard disk whirring away forever, resulting in stuttered mouse movements.

The only solution I've found is to downgrade the viruscan engine to 4.3.20 or get avast/avg/norton/nod instead.. or turn off on-access scanning.

This may or may not apply to your version of Mcafee, as there are a ridiculous number of versions out there, but if it says 4.4.00 somewhere on a VS screen, that may be your issue.

Did Kapersky tell you what files where infected, and with what?

I'm not familiar with windoctor, but the commctrl message could just be a notification that that dll has been upgraded since installation by windows update, or another installation, if so, the wording is confusing to say the least..

You can do a similar check by doing start, run, sfc, and you can use the same tool to extract the original from your .cab files (on hard disk, or original 98 CD).

If you do the latter, rename (or copy) the one you have at the moment, in case it causes you further problems, and then you can restore it easily.

Yes........sfc (or System File Check) could check whether this dll has been modified/altered/corrupted by another program.

    Thanx

I had not been getting the file change warning for a while before I posted before but the freezing is still a problem but I'm living with it

I've done everything possible and its still there but almost barable. It seemed to occur around the time of an automatic web update with macafee but thats coming off the computer once I've decided which antivirus to use as it runs out tomorrow

I'm hoping to get a new computer sometime this year anyway if possible. I think this ones had a fairly good run since it was brought in 1999. So long as it doesnt conk out before I get another because I'll be doing that on the net
    Thanx
