To be honest I would take advice over the phone from HMRC with a pinch of salt as I sometimes found them incorrect, unless you can speak to a manager of someone knowledgeable up the food chain. Often they are just reading stuff off the website back at you. Also it is no real defence against the HMRC inspector that you are acting on advice from the helpline - the onus as always is on the taxpayer to get it right.
On the more positive side, having had two HMRC compliance visits in the last two months there were not that bad, really, although I know that is not everyone's experience of it.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0
