Laptop problems. Display driver stopped

Recently I have had some problems with my laptop. It has went to a blue screen and turned itself off on a number of occasions and when I reboot the computer I send the error report.
Another problem which keeps happening is my screen resolution goes wonky and the screen writing becomes huge. I then get the following windows warning message with the title Windows - Display Driver Stopped Responding
The ialmrnt display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and rebbot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me rectify this problem.
Is it likely these two problems are related?
Furthermore I have noticed from trying to put quotation marks round the message that shift 2 gives me this instead @. and shift ' gives me ". Any ideas why these have switched round?
