avast is supposed to be the best (better than AVG).
get it here - http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
you get all the usual virus updates, as with Norton.
Been using for a year now, problem-free.
And don't forget your firewall - best one being Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html ) although ZoneAlarm might be easier for novice users (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zaskulist_download)
Also, monthly runs of updated Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html)
and Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/) are recommended.
Good luck !Nature is a language ... can't you read ?0 -

I agree with driver,
Avast is better than AVG, but I run both on my pc at the same time and sometimes one notices things the other doesn't.
You can get the free edition of AVG here:

An excellent virus scanner.......you have to log on and ask them to perform a scan......is Panda active-scan:

I hope this helps.

This is probably on Fran's list (but it might have dropped off the bottom):
"anyone know a good free anti virus scan/remover tool?"
http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Tech;action=display;num=1100729734
You might want to follow it down to the post from Toxteth O'Grady re AVG, Avast and NOD32 (although NOD32 isn't a freebie)
PS I think the tests referred to in TOGs post are pretty stringent, so a fail doesn't mean the product isn't any good at all - if you haven't got an AV at the mo., either AVG or Avast will undoubtedly be better than none.0 -
Thanks driver 8,
Because of your comments about Avast I added it to my comp. as well as Nortons. On the first scan it found Beagle virus. At least the Nortons removal tool worked(I hope)I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
Oh dear - are we now getting to the stage where we need more than one AV (not both running at same time?) as well as more than one anti-adware/anti-spyware??
I'm happy with NOD32 - but once in a while I'll run an on-line scan to confirm (thanks for the tip, blinky)
