Heating

Am I right in thinking that for my gas central heating to radiators, the dial on the wall I use to select the temperature has a sensor in it that when the room it's in gets to a certain temperature it turns of the boiler to maintain that temperature?

We tend to get home form work and while certain rooms are warm the radiators are not on in so,e rooms, mainly the front room, the dial is in the dining room, when my OH checks the boiler there's no flame and so he turns it off and then on again to get the flame started, but the other day when I turned the dial it clicked and when I moved it over the current temperature it sounded like the boiler fired up.

We rent the house and the system seems old although we have a couple of new radiators as a couple sprang leaks.

Do we need to set the heating at a higher temperature than needed to make sure the lounge gets above 15 when the rest of the house is at 18-22?

Am concerned how much this will cost in the long run.

Thanks
Hell yeah!!

Yes the 'dial on the wall' is a room thermostst. This senses the temperature of the room in which it is situated and turns on the Central heating pump. this will cause the boiler to fire up. (obviously when the CH is turned on at the controller)

You have the problem all of us face, when the room thermostat is not situated in the room you spend much of your time.

If you are not using the dining room It will do no harm to keep the radiators switched off and the thermostat up high(so the room will never reach that temperature) and conrol the temperature of the lounge with the radiator controls

It really is a case of trial and error to get it working as you wish.
