Car insurance while at university

My car insurance renewal is due at the end of the month and I currently have a quote for £645 at my home address.

I'm thinking of bringing my car up to uni, but changing the address raises the cost up to £1300.

As I'm always in between the two places (home for holidays and occasional weekend), should I just continue to use my home address as the cost is much lower? I don't get why there is such a huge rise either.

  • You should insure the car at the main address, ie the one where you spend most time. Work this out as number of days per annum if needbe.

If the car gets broken into during term time (eg) and your insured address is your home address you could have issues. Seems your uni address is a higher risk postcode which is likely to be connected to crime rate (and other factors). It does seem a very large difference though.

Try Endsleigh. They ask for both addresses and ought to give you a good deal as they major on students.

Try phoning the company as well - I was with Churchill in my first year and found that it would cost more to change my address to Bristol. I phoned them and asked what I should do, as I spent equal amounts at the two places and they put a note on my file saying that I'm at uni in Bristol (for future reference) but didn't charge me anything!x
