advice pls- PC "jumpy" & slow, not r

any ideas
xp pro, broadband internet always on,
have resident (for ages) AVG (freebie), spybot,
Ad-aware SE, have run all these and cleared any isolated spyware / etc"- all usually work & intersept any nasties
have firewall in place
have deleted ALL stored cookies

but the PC's running very slow on anything via the broadband, even off line, its very "jumpy" like a small time delay in word
...and i'm not sure if this is connected or a totally seperate issue, but yesterday it would even eject the cd carrier... no light on front when accessed via control panel, now it say administrator has to give permission to access DVD... theres only 1 user - me

Its the same sought of probs as we had when the virus "welchia" & worm blaster were around & infected ntl broadband, but they say no known viruses at current

any advice please.... I'm trying to work on the ** annoying thing..its taking ages
thx

  • Use Windows Task Manager to find out which processes are hogging the CPU on your system:

Right click on an empty area of the task bar (or on the clock) and select Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and then click on CPU a couple of times to sort processes by descending CPU % usage. Read across to the left and report back which processes (Image Name) are using the most CPU. Also, click on the Performance tab and read the total CPU Usage.

Which ISP do you use ?

Have you checked their performance on home page somewhere ?

Sounds very much like a system resource problem to me.

If I were you i would clear all temp files:
Right click My Computer, properties, clean disk

    And then defrag:
Right click my computer, properties, tools, defrag

You might want to scan disk from that menu also.

Disabling startup programs may help free up some ram:
    Start => Run => msconfig

Give that a try and post back your findings

96% System idle process looks like a very quiet system to me, EXCEPT processes list doesn't add up to total 24% CPU usage - perhaps you missed the processes when it ramped up to this level. Is the system still slow in this state, esp. when you start up Word?
cant find either clean disc or defrag
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools

How much free disk space on C: ?

    thanks guys..
    Rob
I'm just going thro the defrag now,
    72% free
    35.21gig pc
    25.56 available
    so loads of space

the PC has just after rebooting several times to try and get it to recognise the cd drive....it still wont even open on request, or the light on front wont go on..... Its just spat the carrier out & left it out unprompted

the dvd will respond to the button to open , but "access denied" when i try to disc something... worked perfectly for last 2 years

its got a time lag again whilst i'm typing this, i'm usually 2 letters ahead... CPU useage at present whilst typing & running defrag is between 29 - 60%,
baffled... thx for help... any other ideas..i'll se what happens after this defrag

I'm with Ntl & checked their service was ok today ( that wouldnt affect Word would it ?

Windows might not be handling the virtual memory correctly - although this won't help the new cd/dvd problems.  I can't quite remember how to increase it right now, I'll post back later.

    seems slightly better after defrag-
    still jumpy

have been watching the process / cpu use
    seem to be "unbalenced"

ie the cpu use seems very up to 6 x what the process list says should be

is this some physical fault in the PC? or as ROB says a virtual mem fault...
    or some bug...

please ...advice ...still driving me insane

    many thanks esp to ROBP

You either have some dodgy hardware (CD/DVD probs) or something is running that shouldn't be.

A very boring job for you - what processes are currently running?

If you prefer you can download Hijack this . Click on Scan, then 'Save Log' and save the text file somewhere. All your running processes will be listed at the top of this text file.

As a matter of interest when you are viewing the process list in Task Manager are you clicking on the top of the 'CPU' column to sort by CPU usage? This will put the highest use proceses at the top of the list which is easier than running up and down the list trying to catch them in use.
