Cold calling

A query I'm hoping someone can help with.

About 7.30pm yesterday someone knocked on our door claiming to be from (I think) Scottish Power, but was insisting he wasn't a salesman. He said they provide all of the actual electricity to our area (just outside of Norwich) and was wanting to check to see what tariffs we were paying (we're with npower) - it's possible we were paying two when we should be on a single tariff. To check this all he needed was to see the back of one of our electricity bills.

I thought it all seemed a bit dodgy so told him to go away, but was wondering if anyone had had a similar experience or knew if it was genuine or some kind of attempt to sign us to a different service. Thanks!

  • It's a common ruse, he IS a salesman. You did exactly the right thing, telling him to go away. Dreadful creatures.

You did right, they really are sc*m. This business is still not regulated and run by cowboys and indians. Another government failure.
Its about time all door to door selling is made illegal. 9 times out of 10 you're being conned.
If there really is a good deal, you can go away , do your own research and make an informed decision, rather than being pressured on the doorstep (plus earn your own commission via cashback !)
  • I had a woman from one of them (Not British Gas), wanting to see my meter, she had ID I let her in. She then started waffling on about getting me changed over blah, blah, blah

Until I pointed out I had a debt on my Prepayment meter and was on a social tarif that had prices frozen until April.

She was very quick and I think she'd get people signed up nefore they had realising what they were doing it!
