please advise me...

Hello I am Siobhan I am new to this forum!

here is my situation:

my mum has a credit card, she owes over £3k and min payment is £72 per month, the interest is £58 so she is clearing £12 per month, problem is she has no income and is a housewife. My dad is unaware of the debt and she is terrifed of telling him so therefore I am paying it, which sucks. I have a daughter who is coming up to a year old and my own fiancial commitments. I have no idea how to resolve it, Barclays are being very unhelpful at the moment

Thanks in advance

Only thing that springs to mind is to get a new 0% Credit Card and move the debt onto that to save on interest accruing.

I would post on the DFW (Debt Free Wanabee) forum, there are loads there who have beaten bad debts and can advise on the way through this.

Got to be a 0% balance transfer credit card. Have a look at advice on the site under cards and loans

Exactly where is the £3000 now ?
under the mattress or in a high rate savings acc ?

Or did she just spend it ?

If so, clearly when she did, how was she thinking of paying it back ?

What happened to the money she was going to use to pay it back as planned ?

If no plan on how she was going to pay it back ........then this is same as getting into a car without a steering wheel ?

Would you get into a car and drive with no steering wheel ?

Nope ...Nor me ........Does she have a driving license ??

You don't say why she is "terrified of telling" your father. Will he be violent, or will he be simply mildly annoyed or disappointed? Her choices are very different depending on the answer to that question.

    Hello Siobhan

    Welcome to the forums.

I am guessing you are looking for a solution to the problem rather than a critique as to how the circumstances came to be.

I tend to agree with NickX, in that, although your post is relevant to credit cards, the Debt Free Wannabe forum might be more appropriate. Empathy comes with experience. ;)

Hopefully you will find it slightly less judgemental, although perhaps not quite as humourous:

    :D
  • well i agree that you came here for advice, so !!!!!ing about how your mum got in debt aint gonna solve the problem.
Personally i would look at a 0% balance transfer, that way debt reduces by £72 a month initially rather than £12 so your paying it off 6 times faster, plus minimum payment will go down faster as balance does?
hope this helps and good luck.
    Chris
