AIG Direct

It's car insurance renewal time again, and I've been following Martin's instructions and doing a bit of legwork. The cheapest quote I've had is AIG Direct at £227, but I have some reservations. Mostly because I've read so much about AIG's liquidity crisis and I think I'm concerned it might go under leaving me uninsured. Does anyone have any thoughts, or indeed any experience of them in general?

Part of me says go to a bigger name like Admiral, but another part says that's not the money saving way!

Thanks

Douglas

AIG Direct is actually administered by Fortis UK along with other brands such as Green Bee (John Lewis), Autodirect, NPower, Cover Direct and quite a few more. It is not the same flavour of AIG that had all of the fun last year. If you look closely at your quote you will see that the policy itself is underwritten by a different insurer such as Fortis, NU, RSA etc.

IMO you have got nothing to worry about. In any event, this is car insurance that we are talking about not an investment. There are protections in place should any UK motor insurer collapse.

    Hope this helps.

I ended up going with AIG, thanks to the £45 cashback from quidco. I had thought there was some kind of backup scheme should it go bust, but it was nice to have it confirmed. In total it was £220 cheaper than my renewal with Privilege. Frankly I just love the fact that by putting a bit of savvy and effort in it's possible to save such money.
