Have you tried putting it on a hot wash, if theres some sort of musty smell to it, and add something like biotex to boost powder, and of course lots of fabric conditioner, would check if it is cotton and it its suitable for hot washing before, you wouldnt want it small enough to fit the cat!

Would def recommend biotex, but i much prefer to buy the super-spray as they call it, have been using it for years & has never let me down yet!, good luck finding the spray as i have not seen a bottle for ages :(

    Bring back BIOTEX superspray!!:D
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • I can't find towelling dressing gowns for women anymore, even men's aren't that easy to find.

I'm sure all the above are right (I never use fabric conditioner either cos I don't like any of their smells - have never missed it) I am sure drying it thoroughly on a windy day out of doors would help, but my (would be VERY old now) Mum used to say that hanging things outside in the night air got rid of nasty pongs. And I often do just that - leave things out all night and in the morning they just smell of fresh air. Works for everything, dishes, Tupperware, bedding clothes. Not easy in this sort of weather tho !
  • I had this with gym stuff. I found washing at around 60 deg with some bicarb and regular biological washing powder, and using white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner helped a lot. But I think the single biggest factor was line drying. So wait till the next good day is forecast and try this!
  • I think I know that smell - sometime happens to face cloths or towelling things that aren't dried thoroughly. A hot wash and through dry usually sorts it but am interested in the fabric conditioner theory!!
  • If you have absolutely nothing to lose, put a squirt of bleach instead of washing power into the dispenser and wash at 60. Then wash again as normal. I did this as a last resort for some whites and they were much better afterwards.

before next time i wash it, i would hang it outside for a few hours to allow lots of fresh air to circulate, i open my doors and windows for an hour sometimes to keep air moving through the house, or if DP has been smoking inside.

Hope you can sort it out, its a shame when you have things that need replacing that you love, especially when cash is tight

It's not an excuse from him for you to getr id of it is it??:rotfl:

Sure a good blast on boil wash and and dry outside might help? My Mum had one that I had got from a hotel for about a year and it started to smell questionable despite washing appropriatly. She now uses it to dry the dog:rotfl: and got a new one from Primark!

    Good Luck!

AFAIK you shouldn't use fabric conditioner on towel type things in any case - it reduces the absorbancy and makes them stiff. Vinegar is much better!
  • I too get attached to my dressing gowns. Trouble is, I've been given one about every-other Christmas, so I've got about three old (but still nice) ones sitting in the airing cupboard. I don't want to hijack the thread or go too off-topic, but does anyone know of any good uses for old dressing gowns? Mine are the fleecy soft type and I wondered if I could make cosy bedsocks/slipper type things out of them (but I can't sew!)...

I give mine a wash a couple of times a month along with the towels and bedsheets and it's fine.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
