I did some fairly in-depth research into free antiviruses about 10 months ago, and Avira AntiVir, Avast and (the older vesion of) AVG were most frequently recommended detected the highest proportion of "in the wild" viruses.
I use AntiVir on most of my PCs as it is so lightweight. I recently tested AVG (v8) and AntiVir on the same PC (not at the same time!) running Windows XP. AVG used about 38MB of system RAM, while AntiVir used about 8MB.0
