Calbrated Meter Readings.

I work in the research and devlopment depatment for my current employer. Myself and fellow engineers tend to get a unit spec or capacity from the customer and then build and design around that.

Once a unit has been designed and manufactured we have to test various airflows, energy consumption, and temps with CALIBRATED instruments.

My point is:

Why aren't our gas and electricity meters ever calibrated to make sure they are reading correctly?

Our R & D department has to send off these instruments to be independantly verified once a year so that we can manintan accuracy when recording data. Every tool or instrument we use can only be used accurately in a certain range, ie, our scales are only accurate and designed to measure weights no greater than 65kg.

With the extreme weather conditions we experience in this country now is the equipment used to record and store our gas, elec and water usage accurate enough and reliable?

In the summer we can expect to reach way over 30deg c and this winter, i have recorded tempreatures as low as -8deg c, and my meter is kept in a shed, directly outside my flat where there is no heating!

Should our gas, elec and water meters be calibrated, and could we potentailly be paying too much (or not enough) for these resources?

Thoughts please.

They are calibrated when they are made. I recall that they are then replaced after around 10 years, though I may be wrong about this.
Are you prepared to pay for your gas/electic meter to be checked at a greater frequency?
