Contents Insurance - Proof of identity?

Hello,

I'm fairly new to contents insurance and making claims. But I have been with Norwich Union a year, and at the begining of December 08, I cracked my laptop screen. As the laptop is 3 years old, I didnt bother to keep any reciepts or boxes for it.

In those 3 years I have also moved house. It would be highly unlikely in my eyes for any young person (mid 20's) to keep the boxes and recipts safe.

Norwich Union has refused to process the claim because I have nothing to prove that it's mine (which it is)

I'm not too switched on regarding this and whould like to ask you guys for help with what I can do.

  • Did you pay on a credit or debit card - if so, can you get hold of a copy statement?
  • My mum bought it years ago and doesnt recall how she paid for it. We're currently trying to find the payment being made. I can't help but feel they can make any decsion they want, and I can do nothing about it
  • You are doing what you can. Best to see what you can turn up and then get a final decision. Assume you have considered pros and cons of claiming, what with excess, (possible/likely) increased premium and the drop in price of laptops since you got it?

If the laptop has a connector for adding a second monitor you could plug one in and call up your documents. Hopefully there will be personal stuff in there to prove it is yours.

Most machines have a hot key press to enable the second monitor so you should be able to get it to work even though the main display is broken.

Of course, this would be pretty easy to fake so it might be an idea to suggest they get their technicians to do it if they want to be certain.
