Dr William Weir?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here had been to see Dr William Weir? He was formally consultant physician in charge of the ME Clinic at the Royal Free Hospital in London and is now running a private practice.

I'm interested in finding out about people's experiences with him but would appreciate it if any negative comments be kept to PM for legal reasons (for MSE) and to stop the thread being deleted.

Thanks Kathy, I still haven't seen him. I emailed for an appointment but never heard back. If you have his email address would you mind PMing it to me?

I don't see any reason why positive comments would need to be kept private. Dr Weir isn't touting snake oil, he has worked for the NHS and is providing a necessary consultation service.

    Hi

Dr Weir has been my husband's consultant for many years, firstly at Coppetts Wood under the NHS and following his sabatical he is now in Private Practice at 10, Harley Street in London.

He is in our opinion very good, done a lot of work on ME was part of the governments working party of CFS.

If you would like any further information and would prefer to PM me please do so
  • there are many doctors trying to make money out of ME and CFS -- if a doctor was serious about helping ME or CFS sufferers, would they set up a practice in Harley Street London? -- also many ME NHS so-called experts started their medical lives in psychiatry and often view ME as a psychological disorder, thus prescribe anti-depressants and congnitive therapies, whereas the latest thinking leans more to the cause of a viral illness, followed by nervous system infection that leads to an ongoing inflammatory response, hyper immuno response and follow-on fatigue. There is no one answer and no one cure, but for those that have recovered, change in diet, lifestyle and way of thinking is the method most cited. This is the adicve you will pay money for.

I am an ME sufferer and health professional, I would advise anyone with ME to begin by reading, there are some excellent books on ME, try Amazon first - read at least 5 books, which would cost no more than £50 and you will know more about ME from those books than you will know at the end of a year of private consultation at a Harley Street Practice, that will cost somthing like £1000-2000 for a few sessions.

Dr, Shepperds book on "Living with ME" and Dr. Collinge 's book on "Recovering from ME" are the best places to start.

I am hoping to become an ME specialist in the future, but I wont be in Harley Street for sure! Im still searching for answers myself and still suffering like many people, but Im better informed, often better informed than the experts I meet.

    Hi seanthomas,

Whilst I agree that there are many alleged experts, I have to say that our dealings with Dr Weir and these have been over 15years, firstly at Coppetts Wood and for the last few years at Harley Street. He has alway dealt with us with a genuine understanding of this condition, he has been honest with his prognosis and supportive in his care.

I appreciate that when you say Private Practice in Harley Street the £££ signs ring, however, it is not for me to question why Dr Weir is in Private Practice I am only grateful that he is my husbands consultant.

Unfortunately when my husband first became ill he had the usual "care" from a mental health team - this nearly destroyed him. At that time nearly twenty years ago we were battling the "Yuppie flu" medics who had no comprehension of what M.E was and how devastating it can be not only for the person who suiffers but also their family.

You will find good and bad medics but please do not tar everyone with the same brush.

I wish you success in your endeavours
