Direct Line are a pretty good comapny, but you'd be amazed how many cancellation letters/phone calls get lost.
I woudl advise getting the name, time and date of the person taking the phone call and calling back later to check it's been cancelled for confirmation with someone else.
OR
send a letter by recorded delivery (about 70p)
OR
and email with a receipt and read receipt.

Basically you need to p;rotect yourself again your letter being "lost in the post" or "no record" of your phone call.
As I say Direct Line are a good company but there are companies (specifically gyms I'm thinking of) who lose every single cancellation and require you to prove it.
