Okay, after a quick bit of Googling (God love 'em!), I've discovered that a Time Base Corrector does the deed of stripping off Macrovision protection and stabilising the image (so the transfer should be better quality - whether home video or commercial tape).

At £250+VAT the obvious choice is to buy all my videos again on DVD from Play, but the geek in me wants me to buy the time base corrector and do them all myself. :rotfl:
Convenience or geek fun.......convenience or geek fun........convenience or geek fun......I have no signature.0 -
I thought that Macrovision only kicked in when you did VHS -> VHS0

I've just started using one of those USB stick transfer jobbies. It comes with software you instal on your computer, plug the audio/visual leads into your vcr, the USB into your computer, start the supplied program, play your tape, click on Record in the software, watch and wait.
Result was excellent.

Jeffy - what outputs does your VHS player have?
You might be able to use one of the following:

Thanks for all the posts I need to do the same but have been putting it off for years, using the "I don't have the correct cable excuse". So I will now get on with it.

I got mine from Bid TV (https://www.bid.tv) for around £15 inc. p&p.
It's an Ikasu AV-820 USB Audio Video Converter. I looked the other day on their website and couldn't see any more coming up for auction, so don't know whether they'll be having any more in or not.
I had a conflict with the drivers when I first set it up on a Win XP Pro laptop and I had to repair the wireless connection every time I booted the lappy. No great problem and I'll sort that out after I've finished tape copying.0 -
Ive been meaning to do this for years too. Managed to do the dv camcorder to pc. but still have old vhs tapes and other older canon camcorder tapes.
Thanks for the info on this its helped me too.0 -

Don;t know that one ( but plenty of user reviews on Amazon HERE) - but have this one and it does the job fine

But there are many re-packaged variations, most prob some from same original factory I expect
If you find you only have scart on the VHS player, you can get a small convertor which plugs in to that scart and provides the relavent phono connections for a couple of quid in Tesco - just looks liek a scart plug which phonos connectors where the cable would normally come out0
