Microsoft word

Options
Please where can I get a free download for microsoft word. The works suite 7 is so basic, the old computer had a full version of Office professional. Now everything I saved, it's in notepad. I have heard about openoffice, how long does it take to download on dial up. Still cannot make up my mind with broadband as there are so many to choose from. Thanks

Open Office is fine (but don't try to download on dial-up!) Look for a computer magazine offering it on their cover disc. You will probably need the DVD version of the magazine.
  • Open Office is great, I use it instead of XP. The developers are quite happy for people to distribute it for free so if you have a friend with Broadband you should have no problem burning it to DVD. If you have a decent connection you can download the full program in mins.

Just got my Tiscali 1meg broadband connected today...... all seems good, and is only £14.99 a month..... doubt you will find much cheaper :)

PS. Get Open Office here... http://www.openoffice.org/ but as said before, don't download it on dial up! Maybe go round to a friend with broadband, download it and burn it to a CD :)

    I use Telewest Blueyonder for £17.99 a month @ 2mb no
problems to report as of yet in a space of 9mths.
  • Top four at the moment, in terms of performance, reliability and customer service appear to be (in no particular order):

    Zen
    IDNet
    NewNet
    Eclipse

Zen are always the stand out but expensive.

Take a look at the others and see if there's a package that suits your needs at an acceptable price.

    TISCALI,

If you want cheap, then they are certaintly cheap, but you don't get reliable speeds and connections, they won't talk to you via emailmail, the only support you get is if your willing to pay 50p a minute to talk to someone in an Indian call centre, who then pass you on to someone else, after you've talked to them for 5-10 mins, because you've come to the wrong office. (been there, done it, got the tshirt.
It took me 18mths to leave Tiscali, because they wouldn't issue me with a MAC Code, left them now and I couldn't be happier. :j

Believe me they are the pits,

I use BTYahoo! 2MB ADSL Option 4 and haven't had any problems in just under a year I have been connected. In fact, it is a year in 5 days time.

As for OpenOffice, there are a number of distributors of OpenOffice CDs which can be found under the United Kingdom section here http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/index.html. Yes, it costs, but it would be better than downloading on dialup.
