Current cheapest option for 0870 calls

Hi,
Yesterday I picked up one of the BT VP1000 home monitoring alarms, for the bargain price of £14.97 from PC World.
To make use of the free trial subscription to the BT monitoring facility, I have to connect the control panel to my phone line - and it dials an 0870 number to report any alerts.
I have a standard BT phone line, and don't usually make any outbound calls on it as I'm fortunate enough to have a company mobile, with inclusive personal calls.
What's the cheapest way of me making these 0870 calls? I've had a look through the articles but can't find a recent "cheapest" option.
Cheers,
Marc

Surely you are not expecting a significant number of alerts a month! Anyway, if you want to save a penny or two try the UK Callchecker at the top of this page.0 -
I think your problem is going to be that it dials (i.e. you cannot intervene in the dialling process).marc.faulkner wrote: »What's the cheapest way of me making these 0870 calls?
If you do have control, BT are cheapest weekday evenings and overnight but 08081703703 (18185's freephone gateway number) is cheapest weekdays and at weekends.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks.

I can alter the number it dials, so can make it dial the gateway number first and then the service centre number. 18185's service looks good, although I don't think I can make it dial different numbers at different times/days...
Unlikely that I'll ger many alerts, but I don't want to be paying over the odds for any that I do get!0 -
Not an expert but I understand that some of these systems "dial home" at regular intervals to make sure they are still working. Best check to see if your system does that.0
