Can I cancel and then renew credit cards?

in Credit cards
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had a view on this - I use my credit cards mainly to transfer balances and make use of the 0% interest free period.
I have done this on a couple of cards already and still have these 'active' despite their balances being £0.
My question is, can I cancel these cards and then at a later time apply for one again, thus qualifying for the introductory 0% interest period again? Has anyone else had experience of this?
Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance! : )

You can with one noteable exception which is Nationwide who do NOT allow this.
With all other provides there is a period to wait before re-applying, anything from 2 weeks to 12 months, check out Rodent's link for people's experiences on this.
