Police set to step up hacking of home PCs
"THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant.
The hacking is known as “remote searching”. It allows police or MI5 officers who may be hundreds of miles away to examine covertly the hard drive of someone’s PC at his home, office or hotel room.
Material gathered in this way includes the content of all e-mails, web-browsing habits and instant messaging. "
If you've done nothing wrong etc. etc.:D

Perhaps you should disable Remote Assistance (if enabled) and close one potential back door for them.0

Are they not already doing this via the isp?

Funniest thing I've heard in ages. Wonder how they'll manage to do this. Windows XP has the firewall enabled by default, as does Vista. Most of the population are connecting via a router so are protected by NAT. Many ISPs use dynamic IP addresses so unless you actually install malware, you cannot track the same computer once it's dropped and reconnected.
Saying that, I suppose it'll get all the non IT literates scared. The rest of us will just sit there watching even more of our tax payers money being wasted on a completely unworkable scheme.
Just read the article...
Methods employed...
Breaking into your house and installing a keylogger on the computer. Like I'd not be able to tell.
Sending an email with an attachment which contains malware. Is anyone who is likely to be a target going to fall for that one? Even noobs are told not to open attachments willy, nilly - a message that finally appears to be getting through - and email programs now flag them up as suspicious by default.
Park outside the defendants home and hack into their computer using their wifi connection. Riiight. Good luck with that on my non broadcast SSID, MAC blocking WPA2-AES CCMP secured with random 16 character security key wifi network. You MIGHT get somewhere in a decade or two trying.
Also, wonder how that'll work with Linux considering they even have problems getting access to files when they've physically got the PC in their possession.Conor
