I wonder how much longer the current stand off can continue. Presumably the longer volumes remain low, the more pressure is put onto the finances of marginal sellers pushing more people into being highly motivated or even forced sellers.

Give it another couple of months where the bad news becomes worse and we will see more highly motivated sellers.
At work there are more and more people saying that they know couples who never used to fall out but because of the worry of money they are at it like cats and dogs.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I know I should count my blessings and that there is always someone worse off than me.

i dont know why im like this, i really dont, and I know Im going to get totally ridiculed because ive got savings and im worrying about this, but, I cant help it. I really really cant.
Sometimes when I read this forum, you would think that the world is going to end. I read the post about stockpiling food, i see some people are going on about deflation etc, I think someone somewhere even mentioned about the country going bankrupt, and UK ends up like Zimbabwae or something like that.

Im sorry if ive offended anyone for posting because ive been honest about how worried I am about things. I didnt mean to offend anyone, I just wanted someone to talk to.

90% of the things you worry about won't happen; the other 10% you can't do anything about.

That said, all the things you've listed above MIGHT happen. You just have to do your best to work out what the risks are and plan accordingly; which is why forums like this are great for coming to some kind of consensus on such things.

What surprises me on here though is how any negative economic speculation is considered 'doommongering'; as if we live in some happy-clappy world where bad things never happen. Just because we have had a relatively stable time in this country for the last 60 years or so, does not mean it will last for ever.

I don't think it is a stand off, the vast majority of householders have put up the shutters and will return when this is all over, they realise there is no point negotiating with Barrow boys unless absoloute neccessity demands it.

Today was Day 1 of jobhunting.... looked through 500-600 jobs in 5 counties ... 0 jobs found. Nothing I can do. Applied for 2 anyway, in the spirit of effort, but they weren't really what I want and I probably won't stack up against other candidates.

Of course, that took time - and while there are 100000 jobsites to search through, you can't go through all of them every day ... so I figured today will be slow as it's the first week back after Xmas.
  • By doom mongers I dont mean people who think that prices have further to fall/are preparing themselves for a difficult few years. I don't have a rosy view of the economy by any means.

However, advising people who still have a fair bit of equity/not under threat of redundancy/not in debt/have savings/happily married/in a house they love that meets all their families' needs etc to sell up now to avoid negative equity is doom mongering.

It's encouraging people who have no immediate worries to panic sell their house as fast as possible. Never mind that might mean that they have no money left to put a deposit down elsewhere and would be unlikely to raise one big enough to buy in the current market because of LTVs once they've sold their house for a song. Never mind that they would probably be able to carry on paying their mortgage and want to live in their house for another 20 years so have plenty of time to gain equity back. Or will receive an inheritance over the course of that time etc etc etc.

I'm sorry but when I see people giving general advice like this to anyone who bought this decade who has a mortgage irrespective of their financial situation it does look like nothing more than a cynical attempt to panic people who have no need to panic because of their own vested interests. You want a cheap house and you want it now. Damn these stupid sellers who refuse to sell their house to you for tuppence.

Don't be in any rush to find something darling, having a job is not all it's cracked up to be. After all that p1ssing it up over Christmas, I went back today and it was sh1te getting up at 5am, an hour of prayers, then a bit of self-flagellation, 2 hours of silence then a whole day of listening to other people's problems - I tell you, I'm fewking knackered! :A

No, we just want a fairly decent house at a decent price and not pay overinflated prices just because sellers think they 'deserve it' for doing absolutely nothing to warrant it.

HPI has been kind to sellers just like HPC will be kind to buyers.

Let them find you, put a CV up on monster, jobsite etc, and keep it updated, you'll get phonecalls and interviews without having to trawl through the sites looking. Every little helps!

Now back to the op, there is something there in the background that has turned her into a worrier, even though in reality she has nothing to worry about. Get it all down on paper op, pros and cons. My background formed me and hence we will survive this because I learnt all the lessons since 1948

    Kittie,

the reason i think im like this is because, my parents were always in debt. My mum especially couldnt handle money, dad drank all the money infact mum ended up doing that too. Mum didnt have anyone to "talk" to, so used to share her problems with me (Im talking about primary school age here), and she used to get into trouble with the rent, and i lost count of the amount of times we were nearly evicted.

This is why I dont have any debt except my mortgage, however, if im honest, if it were up to me, I wouldnt have a bought house, and would rather live in a council house. The things that my childhood taught me was never get into debt (well I did class my student loan as debt, and worried about paying that) and never ever ever forget to pay your rent/mortgage. At least if you lose your job and you have a council house, you will always get your rent paid, at least this is what ive been told.

Thats why im so worried about this recession, I worry by husbands business goes under, neither of us cant get another job, and all our savings end up running out and we cant pay our mortgage.

Thats why I think im worrying myself sick about all this.
