When its wrote down like that it doesnt sound much but when i was at my previous job i was doing the same hours and my tax/ni never rose above £25.00?
You are being taxed the correct amount based on figures supplied.
Quick calculation
annual pay £9,624
Tax allowance £489O (single persons tax code)
Taxable pay £4734
£2,020 at 10% = 202
£2,714 at 22% =597
total tax due £799 per annum. £66.59 per month. (This is on a month 1 basis)
From the figures you've been working there for 5 months (I am assuming those were December's pay figures), what were you doing before that time (from April - July 05) if you were not working then you have overpaid tax and need to reclaim it back. If you were working then your previous employer should have given you a P45 which you need to hand to you current employer
If you were not working during this period contact the tax office (details can be obtained from you payslips or your payroll department. Tell them you have not been working for the period April to July and need to obtain the proper tax code of
489L (I assume you are single or married with no kids).
If they issue you with the correct tax code before April 06, you will get the money back through your pay. If not then you need to claim from Tax office.

It would make no difference to his tax code if he did have kids - no additional allowances are given through the tax code for children any more (this is done via tax credits) Also, his new employer would not acept a P45 from a previous employer now as it is too late - any tax codes must come from the tax office.
The problem could be that your tax code on your payslip is 489l x (month 1) but on your computer records it shows the correct code of 489l ..just to be on the safe side..ask HMRC to re-issue your tax code. Be quick and you will get any refund straight through your wagesI have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0 -
The tax code wom't be affected with or without kids, this was phased out a little while back. If you pop into the tax office with oyur payslips and strike it lucky and get someone who knows whatthey are on about then they should be able to send an ammended coding notice to your employer. As a matter of interest and sorry if it has been said before but have you filled in a form P46 to say that this is your only or main job? I phoned the one my employer gave me, ie thre tax office
i work in one jobe for three years that ended 24/03/05 i went on job seekers from 20/04/05 till 21/07/05 i started in this job on the 21/07/05.
I had two p45s at that time, one from my last employer and one from jsa, jsa said i had to give my new employer there p45, and they have crossed the month1 box where as my previous employer hadnt.
Edit: just phoned them again, they havent had any of my jsa forms, my new employer should havd forwarded them on but they have had none, so i have to send them my copy and they should get back to me.0 -

Excellent. Tell them what you said above as well. Just a covering letter detailing what you have bene doing since 6 April 2005 to the present date, so they can see that in this tax year your only income was JSA, then the job you are currently at. You should then be put on a cumulative code, and I would expect you to receive a refund (or at least pay less tax for the rest of the year) as a result of being on a cumulative code. The reason - when you were on JSA your earnings wouldn't have been utilising the full weekly amounts of the 0% and 10% rates of tax.0 -
ahh thanks ctm, i did put that in the letter, i just hope it gets put right as this is doing my head in now! thanks for all your help and i will keep you updated0
