Advice needed

Hi, I live in a rented house, got up this morning, had a bath, went to the toilet, and noticed there was water coming up from the drain in the back garden. Been the house six months only ever put water down the sinks, and human waste and toilet paper down the toilet. Never anything else, I can assure you. The upstairs sink and bath feed into the waste pipe which goes into the ground, the downstairs kitchen sink feeds into the drain where the water is coming up from. Every time I flush the toilet the water rises from this drain where the kitchen sink feeds into, and every time I empty the bath the water rises from this same drain.

In my contract it states this:

“To be responsible for unblocking or clearing stoppages in any sink, or basin, or bath, or toilet, or waste pipe which serve such fixtures if they become blocked with the tenants waste, or as a result of the actions or inactions of the of the tenant ( or his invited guests) in breach of obligations under this agreement”.

Where do I stand, what do I do, I never blocked it.

One thing I did notice was that there seems to be some jointing compound yellow hardened mixture, the stuff which smells of linseed, it was all over the path this morning, it seems to have risen from the drain, maybe a joint has gone or something?

Thanks for reading, any help or advice much appreciated!

contact your landlord immediately - it may be that the drain has collapsed, and this sounds as if it needs his urgent attention
  • Lucky for me the neighbour has a set of "RODS", well old chimney sweep rods, work just as well, i pushed them through, released a load of tissue paper, and some rather large smelly stuff. Its unblocked, we have full flow, but for how long, who know's. It is unblocked, any further problems, and it must be a Landlord problem, collapsed drain or something.

But i have unblocked it, so any more problems and its over to the LL?

It would appear that you did block it, but you have also unblocked it.

No need for any further action at this time I'd say.

Keep an eye on it, if it does start to happen again it might be something more serious.

Sometimes they can just get blocked by the normal stuff. Sh*t happens.
