Car Insurance Help

I am currently insured on a large family car with me as the first driver, and my wife as the second driver. However, I would now like to buy a cheap 2nd car as a run around for local driving.

I am currently insured with Lloyds TSB but am not sure of how I would be able to have my no claims bonus on 2 cars. Getting a quote for the 2nd car without any NCB gives me results with ridiculous amounts.

Additionally, on this 2nd car I would like to keep my wife as the 2nd driver and would also like to add my 18 year old son to the policy.

Before anybody accuses me of fronting by adding my son to the policy, I would like to confirm that I will have the majority of use and will be doing the most mileage on both cars.

Can anybody make a suggestion as to how I may be able to gain reasonable quotes given my situation.

You cannot use the no claims discount on a second policy. Some insurers, however, will give a discount equal to the no claims bonus. E.g. Zurich have an option for "I haved earned NCD on a second car".
  • Thank you for your reply, unfortunately the website says they are unable to insure me, however I will try ringing them up to see if I can sort out anything.

Does anybody know of any other insurers which adopt a similar policy. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  • It really depends on the company and there policy towards the new insurance !! some will offer an introductory bonus on the new policy or if the person who wishes to insure the new vehicle is a named driver on the first policy and has not made a claim they may allow the second policyholder the same NCD on the new policy !! its really just a case of shopping around and see what each company will allow

Most Companies probably won't give you that good a deal on your 2nd car due to the young driver, most deals where they will match the bonus from the 1st car onto the 2nd are only available where there are no drivers under 25 or 21. Some may still do it so it is worth shopping around.

There is another option, contact your existing insurers and find out what the additional premium would be if you were to transfer your 2yrs NCB to another vehicle, then look for quotes on your 2nd car based on 2 yrs bonus, that combination will probably yield the best results as your bonus would be on the 2nd car with the young driver.

Be aware though that not all companies will allow you to transfer your NCB mid-term, you may have to wait until renewal. Also bear in mind that you are on your way to your 3rd year NCB so you don't want to jeopardise that.

To be honest, unless you have a real pressing need for the 2nd car right now, it may be in your best interest to wait until your policy is due for renewal and then you would have 3yrs NCB to put against whichever car you wanted - this would make a big difference with a young driver on.

    Good luck.

  • I currently have 9 years NCB, so transferring a few years onto the new policy would be ideal. Has anybody had any experience doing this especially with Lloyds TSB?
  • all sounds a bit suspicious to me - how often would your 18 yr old son use the car compared to yourself?

Sorry, for some reason I thought you had 2 yrs NCB:o You would not be able to split your 9, it is all or nothing.

In my experience a co will only mirror your NCB onto another policy if you have both policies with them.

Also if you haven't already, at renewal I'd pay to protect the 9 years NCB because you are adding a young driver.
(I'd always advise protecting NCB when you are able to anyway. Not everyone agrees but hubby was glad he had when I had a prang :o )

Unfortunately, my son does not live with me... its a long story. I thought it would be good for him to be insured on the car for when he comes around on the odd weekend to stop him pestering me.

However, looking at the quotes i have been given, I am contemplating as to not adding him as an additional driver so he will not be able to drive the car. Saying that, I will be ringing a few insurers tomorrow to see what kind of a deal I can get anyway.

I do understand as to why you may find this suspicious, but everything I do all has to be fully legitimate and cannot tolerate people who lie and deceive to save money while the rest of us have to pay full whack.

Thank you for all the help given so far anyway.

Unfortunately you cannot subtract a couple of years from your 9 years bonus and use this on another policy.
The bonus would have to be moved as a whole 9 years bonus
