Me and some friends are thinking of going to Cancun in july and wondered if anyone on here has been there and would be interested in your views
Does anyone know how hot and how busy it would be in July?

In July, like all of the Carribean, it is very hot and humid with heavy rains that usually don't last that long.
Personally I don't like Cancun. It has some huge luxury hotels run by the large American chains that are like - er - huge luxury hotels run by the large American chains. There are also some awful hotels whose aim is apparently to pour as much free drink into their clients as possible. These Hotels are wall to wall along a narrow strip of land with some beaches with nice white sand.
Apart from that it has nothing except some Mexican bars that are just like mock Mexican Bars.
It got badly beat up by last year's hurricane and I did read and saw on TV that the most of the beaches were destroyed together with a lot of hotels badly damaged - you need to check that out.0 -
Cancun did get the worst hit in the hurricane and from reports on other boards, it's going to take a lot of work to get it back to normal. Further down the coast is in better condition, with the majority of hotels, bars etc., back to normal.
I dismissed Cancun as it looked too big and Americanised, and we wanted more traditional Mexican.
About an hours drive south of Cancun is Playa del Carmen. Apparantly this is much nicer than Cancun - less developed and more traditional. Have a look here for more info:
http://www.playa.info/
The people who run that site seem really nice and we're going on some of their trips.
The hotel we're staying at is at Punta Bete, which is about 5km north of Playa del Carmen. That's on it's own in the jungle, so it'll be quiet but not too far away from the action in Playa!
Hotels in this area are listed in brochures under Playacar, Playa del Carmen or Riviera Maya.
If you want even less developed head further south towards Tulum. Here I go again on my own....0 -
We loved Cancun but wasn't in the hotel zone - just outside of it (we stayed in the Moon Palace - there are 2 sides - one seemed to be full of couples and families, the other full of groups.).
We were there on our honeymoon though
If you intend staying in the hotel zone it is rather loud, brash and the later the night gets, the rowdier the crowd gets - on some nights I felt as if I were in Ayia Napa!
Oh and from what I've seen on TV stay away from the Blue Bay Gateway unless your into 'adult' hotels!!! :rotfl:
There are some great places to see and wonderful things to do and I thought the whole experience was purely magical.
Hopefully it is well on its way to being patched up now - have fun and enjoy.0 -

Ditto. Great honeymoon venue we found. Did the dolphin swimming, jet boating through mangrove and went to Chitchen Itza, but enough to not do to spend hours lazing.TraceyB wrote:Oh and from what I've seen on TV stay away from the Blue Bay Gateway unless your into 'adult' hotels!!! :rotfl: .
This was our first choice hotel, but it was fully booked. SOOOO glad it was. We stayed in its sister hotel, which was lovely...and nowhere near the hotel strip thankfully. But, as the hotels were linked, we could eat in Blue Bay getaway...had some dodgy activities 7 years ago (evening ents like wet T-shirt comp) but seems to have got a little more "adult" since then.
Cancun was a wonderful place for us. Hopefully it is restored enough now for tourists to have as much fun there as we did.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

A quick search on the internet I came accross a Thomas Cook holiday for 2 weeks all inclusive for £680 to cancun, the hotel was rated a 2* but the supplied pictures looked nice and not minty as I was expecting it to look !!!!!!0

Check www.eclipsedirect.co.uk and www.firstchoice.co.uk
The main reason is their new long haul service. According to them, you get a bigger seat, better meals, seat back TV set with films, TV, music and interactive games. Sounds much more comfy than other airlines.
Eclipse were also the cheapest when we booked. Here I go again on my own....0 -

Forgot to say before...July is the start of the USA summer holidays so Cancun fills up with lots of college students who can drink in Mexico (18+) and can't in USA (21+).
We left on 5th July and already 1 in 4 people we saw looked from this group (long shorts, loud voices, lots of them in pubs)...so if you can bear horny drunken Americans it's your place in July! Alternatively go in June and they aren't anywhere in sight!Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I think you will find the summer vacation for most American States starts in early June - the 9th June for many this year.
Agree with the loud/horny/drunken description of the Americans but you rarely get the aggressive behaviour of the English 'lager lout'0 -
Cancun is my favourite place ever; we got married there in 1999 and have been back once since. It is americanised but that just means that you have more choice and the streets are immaculate. The people are the nicest I've ever met. They try to give up sits for you on Buses! We stayed at Costa Real when we got married. This is at one end of the Hotel Zone. You can get a Bus from outside the Hotel that costs about 20p and they run every couple of minutes all along the Hotel zone, going to all the Fab shopping centres. In 2001 we stayed at Moon Palace; September 11th was half way through our holiday so there was a strange atmosphere. It was to out of the way for me and would rather be in the Hotel Zone.
It will be full of Americans in July; there are some Hotels that seem to have more Americans than others. My brother went last year in July and it didn't bother him. I have never seen more fake Boobs in one place I found it very amusing.0 -
Regarding getting married in cancun. Did you have to have two witness? I would love to get married there but i read that you need two witness, is that true. Or is it only some parts.0
