One added question, you mention upgrade, how do you do an upgrade on the DVD player?

Hi yes I'm not a gamer and my TV is a HD ready Samsung LCD.

The DVD you are recommending, just to confirm is it the Samsung per my link above?

it is indeed, you wouldnt think a dvd picture could be improved until you see a blu ray

you can goto the samsung website and download the updates, you can either burn them to a cd or an empty USB stick
Power the player on, wait for it to initialize, then either insert the USB stick or the CD, and it should detect the new firmware. Follow the prompts, and let it do the job.

Bought my son a Panasonic DMP-BD35EB-K Profile, currently about £185, from Amazon which had some good reviews. He had a HD Samsung for gaming and as was said earlier the improvement over regular DVD is worth the money. Discs are pricey but starting to get cheaper esp if you look for offers. Asda has some good deals at present and there are others about

One thing that adds to expense is the HDMI cable, make certain that you buy a decent one as the players tend not to provide any

ive always used a cheap one, think tesco sell them for about £3,apparently there is really no difference between a £3 and a £30 one,its a digital signal and is either there or isn't
  • I'd go for Blu-Ray if i was you, the picture quality is out of this world.

And yeah, asda have some on 2 for £20 at the minute. Not bad films either.

They aren't that expensive compared to dvds anyway.

Oh, and we got a gold plated HDMI cable from Zavvi for £4 last week...
