Dvd Player or Blue ray?

Looking to replace existing cheap model of DVD player and not sure whether to buy DVD or Blue ray player. Worried about Blue Ray perhaps not taking off and becoming niche/obselete market but also thinking as players are so cheap may as well go for extra expense as they can play DVDs as well.
Anyone any thoughts on this and recommendations for good reliable players both DVD and Blue RAY.

Can't help on recommendations for specific products, but rest assured blueray is here to stay as the physical media for delivering HD content.
Though it remains to be seen how long it takes for widespread adoption to occur; it'll certainly take longer than DVD.0 -
Consider a Playstation 3, it acts as a Blu-Ray player and is cheaper than most stand alone players, plus you have a games console as well

If your cheap player still works then maybe you should wait for about 6 months, blu ray player with come down a lot in the summer and then get one. I think Blu rays will replace dvds in the long term - (5-10 years time).0

Thanks for comments so far, need a player now as old one is failing to read discs anymore.
Thinking about these two models, one entry level at around £100 and the other £150.

I wouldn't even touch the cheap one, the Samsung is better but again it's not future proof as it's capable of version 1.1 & not 2.0 which gives you access to online extras etc.... If you can afford the extra get a PS3 as it's future proof with regular downloadable updates. It's also a web browser, plays games, wirelessly streams music, pics & films from your pc, really an all round excellent media hub. If you shop around you can get some pretty good deals on it..... ;-]What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!0 -
Well I bought my old man "the cheap one" for crimbo and he's enchanted with it. The picture quality is every bit as good as my PS3, it loads up quickly & upscales his dvd's. The "cheap one" is basically a US model manufactured for Best Buy & for all its "cheapness" has had some pretty OK reviews.

Most folks are only going to watcha movie anyway so when it comes to different profiles, extras etc it really doesn't make much odds. And that model has an ethernet connection anyway so in theory is futureproof, assuming the manufacturer makes upgrades available.
But blu-ray is the way to go, I reckon.0 -
& people have forgotten the obvious:
Do you have a HD Ready tv?
If not, there is no point in getting blu-ray, as you wont see any difference.0 -

fair point about the ps3,but maybe the original poster isnt a gamer,if they arent then you just have an ugly looking and noisy dvd player lol0 -
Hi yes I'm not a gamer and my TV is a HD ready Samsung LCD.
The DVD you are recommending, just to confirm is it the Samsung per my link above?0
