My son just called to say he has split up with Gf. he lost his job a few weeks back and was claiming benefits but now as he moved in with her he is having to come back home. In reality I like being by myself and it will be hard to have him back after many years but I cannot refuse him. My query is this though. I am living on the edge myself and am claiming 25% single person discount on my council tax. with him here i will not be able to claim this. I dont suppose there is any way he can claim that percetage back when he starts claiming here is there? I really cant afford to pay the extra each month and he has a loan and child expenses from a previous relationship he has to pay. thanks

If he is on a low income you (as Council Tax payer) can apply for a Second Adult Rebate. This is dependant on the non-dependant's income not yours.

I dont think he can, why dont you just charge him the excess 25% to what you will have added on to your CT bill.
Are you letting him stay with you rent and board free?0 -
thing is he had a loan very stupidly to pay for a car he cant now sell and the loan is £260 a month so whatever benefits he gets will be totally eaten by that. I have enough worries of my own and now it seems I have these added ones as well. sorry. going on a bit0

if he can't pay the loan, then he can't. board and food come first! He may have to not pay and accept it will screw his credit rating and he will have to give the car back; but its a better choice than both of you going hungry.
I'd get him to the CAB or one of the debt charities to discuss his loan. Don't suppose he took unemployment insurance on it?Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Where is the loan from, might they freeze it/reduce it for a short time until he finds work?Torgwen..........

I can find out but his gf was a bank manager and he got the loan through her and it was fairly low interest. I will have to see how things lie.And thanks for the second adult rebate thing. just looked at my local councils site and looks like I may be able to apply (or he may be able to) so at least it seems that part or all of the dscount can be applied for. It depends on if he can have his claims relocated from ireland to here but i am not sure about that. they may just make him wait 6 weeks or something I dont know how these things work0

With the Second Adult Rebate it is you that applies but his income that is counted. If Republic of Ireland perhaps he needs to put in a new claim here, if N. Ireland maybe the same, has he checked?mrs_baggins wrote: »I can find out but his gf was a bank manager and he got the loan through her and it was fairly low interest.
