Since my son got his Sony PSP for Christmas we have been looking for some free software to convert video files he has on his PC to MPEG4 so he can play them on his PSP.
We found Video 9 and it has worked well :j so others may like to try it.
Due to post number 9 below I have removed the link I included previously. The site is easy enough to find though - just do a google on Video 9.
Don't really know what the problem is though as Sony sell similar conversion software for about £14, but why pay when you can get it for free.

Unless its home movies i think the moderator will pull this.0

You can use the "official" Sony converting software which is not bad but I think they now charge for the download from the Sony site. When I had a PSP I used 3GP image convertor which was a very basic click and convert system and proved good results, tried rapiz psp convertor but found it very slow and took ages to make a second pass on video and kept hanging on so never really used it that much as i did not rate that bit of software0

PSP Video 9 is the best and most reliable free programme for converting your video files for use on the PSP IMO.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

You need to rip them first into a Video Object File (VOB) e.g. Star Wars Ep 3 ripped to a 4gb VOB file. You then use PSPVideo to convert this file. I got it down to about 400mb with no loss of quality.
Oh and to rip the DVDs I dvddecrypter really easy to use although DVD Shrink is recommended too.
EDIT: Link removed, mainly as it doesnt work anymore.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Probably best to remove the above link, or not recommend it (maybe just mention it off-hand) as I believe it's illegal in the UK (due to breaking the css encryption). I'm ok with it, but I wouldn't be so sure about the moderators."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
