Help Needed on A Vegan Sunday Roast?

Options
Evening

Have just been informed by OH that his friend and his mate are coming on sunday for dinner:rolleyes: His mate will eat anything and easy to please, but his friend is apparently a vegan-how strict I dont know:confused:

Im doing a sunday roast like every other sunday, but what do I give him as a meat alternative-we will be having chicken. Im going to serve:

Roast Spuds (roasted in veg oil)
New Potatoes
Carrots
Cabbage
Stuffing (made with water-I will have to check ingredients though)
Peas
Roast Parsnips (roasted in veg oil)
Veggie Gravy-will need to buy this though

Pudding-Thinking of doing a fresh fruit salad and maybe get some soya ice cream for him or just serve plain and cream for us lot:D Also have an apple pie in for us if needed.

Does this sound OK for a Vegan? What should I serve him instead of the chicken? Quorn fillet? Ive never cooked these before:confused: Or is there something else tasty and easy and cheap to do? I dont mind paying for something as long as its not too much. It will only be for him as I know the other lot wont eat it..LOL.

Can anyone help?

PP

PP, What about a huge pile of meaty mushrooms, maybe cooked with some garlic and olive oil.In fact I bought a mushroom the size of a small plate from my farm shop recently and me and OH ate it like steak. It was delish, easily as good as steak. ;)
  • Do you think that would suffice? It doesnt sound right to me..LOL. Im used to meat, spuds and veg. Not veg, veg and well veg:confused: Does he not need protein?

    Thanks for the quick reply

You could buy a nut roast 'kit' from a health food store - I think they cost under £3 - the ones I have seen are made by Granose - you would need to check they are vegan though (I am fairly sure it is, but not absolutely 100%) - the package should say on it, but if unsure ask the sales assistant, or you could try nut cutlets, veggie sausages (obv. not quorn ones!) etc, which are often found in the chill cabinet of the supermarket.
  • There is some excellent recipes on www.vegweb.com Its difficult with Vegans as some can be very very fussy, I had 4 of the tree hugging, bearded, hairy legged vegans (girls too!) move in with me for 18 months!! Remember Vegans come from the planet Vague - I found it best to ask them about food first :D

  • Sosmix and Burgamix is OK too - but I woudn't eat it! Pink Slimy stuff but cooks up firmly.

  • Most of the Bisto granules (though *not* powder, I don't think) are vegan, including the red-carton 'original' granules (the only one I'm not sure of is the chicken flavour). If you want to OS it - search the net. You'll probably find lots of mushroom gravies and such like.

Paxo sage and onion, I'm pretty sure is vegan.

(I'm just thinking of the major brand names here!)

Thiftlady's suggestion is a good 'un. I love mushrooms with a 'roast'.

Or, a really simple and quick (and easy to find!) 'centrepiece' we sometimes have is the Tesco frozen nut roasts. Box of four, in round 'patties' like burgers, not sure how much - £1.60 or so, I think! I could recommend a lot of other things, but most won't be easily available to you on such short notice. :)

In terms of how strict he is - vegan usually means: no meat (inc. fish), no dairy products, no eggs, no honey, no insect (like some food colourings and shellac), along with the non-dietary aspects that I don't need to go into. ;) That includes derivatives like whey powder and albumen, but nowadays the allergy labels on food make it much easier to check for these things.

Dairy-free ice cream can be expensive - Alpro 'Dairy-free alternative to single cream' is about 69p and is available in most supermarkets in a long-life carton.

Otherwise, sorbet is often vegan - and everyone enjoys that. :)

You'd need to register (free), but the Vegan Society now have the Animal Free Shopper online: http://www.animalfreeshopper.com/html/ It doesn't include 'obvious' vegan things like jam, but it's a good guide for the rest.

If there's anything specific you want to ask about, feel free to PM me, and I'll see if I can help. I'm used to squinting at labels and working out what it all means!

    HTH. :)

I wouldn't recommend sosmix or burgamix - afair, it has hydrogenated oils in it, and uses GM ingredients.... I can't see a 'proper' vegan being too keen...

don't give him quorn contains egg,not vegan, the ice cream you need is called swedish glace, can be got from most supermarkets in a few flavours as well. You could make apple crumble use a soya spread or olive oil spread instead of butter to make crumble. best of luck. Also Kumala is a vegan wine(betcha didn't think about that one !!!!!!!)
