All things come to he who waits

I have just obtained a satnav at no cost. I have added it to my other no cost acquisitions including a mobile phone, flat screen television, dvd recorder, mini hi-fi, computer, printer, scanner and microwave.

Where did I get them? As cast-offs from younger members of my family who must have the latest, most fashionable items. When something new comes out I just sit patiently and wait to receive last year's model or whatever. I haven't been given a car yet but I live in hope.

The young are so impulsive and fashion conscious which is very good for us older folk.

  • Agreed in part . I have had a couple of mobile phones from our son.

However, he has had a digital camera from us when we upgraded.

    So, works both ways!

Updating might slow down somewhat with the credit crunch :D

My husband is the one who wants the latest TV etc, so my son benefits from our couple of year old cast off goods.

So the process can work in reverse!

It certainly does in our case.

I suppose the knack is in deciding how much you need to have a comfortable retirement but no-one knows how long that will be.

Helping out a (grateful) family is a perk of my happy retirement but I do keep some money back for whatever comes my way. No - you can't take it with you when you go but keep some just in case you don't go for a while!

It would indeed be very useful to know the date of one's appointment with the Grim Reaper - for financial planning it would be great. You'd know whether to spend money on life insurance or a pension, and when to retire. But you'd really only want your "financial brain" to know about it and not tell you!

Ours will have to wait until we are gone as most of our assets are tied up in the house. We are always being told it is far too big for us and we should move to somewhere smaller. It is true it's too big but it's been our home for nearly 50 years and anyway we like lots of space to rattle around.
