Need help with importing camcorder video (.MOD) into windows movie maker

Just got myself a Canon FS100, which seems to create .MOD files. (This works on windows media player)

I've used Windows Movie Maker to edit clips in the past, and to create DVDs, so was hoping to do the same with this camcorder.

However, windows movie maker doesn't seem to recognize .MOD, so I'm a little stuck.

A quick google, and I've found that apparently simply renaming the file extension from .MOD to .MPG will fix the problem, however when I try to rename, it only lets me rename the filename, not the .MOD extension.

Can someone please help me import these files into windows movie maker, or if not, perhaps recommend me a different (+free!) movie editing/DVD creating software?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, figured out how to rename it.mpg, but it still doesn't work with WMM. Plays the sound, but no picture.

I came across that website... didn't help unfortunately.

I've since sorted the problem. If I take the SD card out of the cam and put it directly into my PC, the resulting .MOD file won't work with WMM, but strangely if I leave the SD card in the cam and connect the cam directly to the the PC, it then works!

    Strange!

When you have the SD card in the camera is Movie Maker seeing it as a MOD file or is it actually importing it directly as a video stream?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

When the cam (with SD card inside) is directly connected to the comp, and I use the supplied software to transfer the file, it seems to transfer it as a .mpg file, which then works in WMM.

If I don't use the supplied software and simply put the SD card in my comp, it remains a .MOD file, which no matter how I change it (eg rename, convert etc) won't work with WMM!

Strange, but at least it's sorted now!
