The local Salvation Army might be able to help too, give them a ring.

I had to redecorate a really minging council house a few years ago, and invested in a massive tub of magnolia paint from a DIY store - about £15 for a mahoosive tub. It did the trick of covering up a multitude of sins, and giving the place not only a fresh colour, but a fresh smell too!! :-/

I wouldn't - even with thick curtains up it's still pretty cold.
Get yourself signed up on Freecycle and see if you can bag yourself some curtains or get some from the charity shop. Then just replace with new as you go along.

i would agree with the others and give freeshare a try.We also have in our area an impact housing shop that sells items that have been donated cheaply to people who need them, fridges, sofa etc.there could be something like this in your area too.Good luck.

Double glazing is excellent at keeping the heat in so you are on a winner there already!!

It's all what you can do cheaply at the mo as you can update later when you have the money.

Obviously curtains will give you a bit privacy too.

I agree with others. Magnolia paint is the way to go for the moment and decide what rooms you want done first - I would suggest the ones you live in most so probably the living room and maybe the kids bedroom (s). You can magnolia the walls then buy stickarounds for the kids rooms (£10 a pack) to make them more friendly for them.

Now is the right time to buy cheap paint as the credit crunch and also the DIY shops have offers on in Jan as they know everyone has been thinking about updating the house.

Just concentrate on one room at a time - you will be surprised how quick you will get round the house especially if you can offload the kids for a day or even the weekend.

The important thing is that you are dry and sheltered and you have that already.

Lots of luck to you :)

you could also ask on freeshare if anyone has any spare paint,i have seen this before on ours, even only small amounts and you could mix with a big tin of cheap white paint.

also check out your local charity shops as they often have lots of curtains and some will be lined - ikea are cheapish for blinds but i would go with curtains to keep the heat in - could you mention to your friends aswell as i keep spare curtains in the loft for when i wash my curtains so if i knew a friend needed them i would gladly give them over - also everyone seems to have a sale on at the moment so you could check out soft furnishings with various stores although i find tescos great for towels and sheets at reasonable prices - good luck

    Try a local auction.
You can grab real bargains there. I saw tables and 4 chairs going for £2, and 3 piece suites for a tenner. I kid you not.
