My PC keeps switching off

Had problems over past few weeks, with mouse, then keyboard, then slow, lots of freezing up, then switching off. Used all usual virus checks, cleaned tower & fans, just had it re-formatted but today tried 12/15 times but will not stay switched on in normal or safe mode.

Does this sound like a hardware issue?

It is about 5 years old so perhaps time for new one?

My old one decided to do this aswell. I think it had a trojan or something but im no tech-head so can't give proper advice. Since you've had it for 5 years, you may better to get a new computer rather than getting it repaired.

Definitely sounds hardware related if you have indeed done a full reformat. True, the longevity of a pc depending on make, usage, care would (potentially) be approx five yrs. Have u tried removing the cover of the pc and then powering on?

Not sure what you mean? When I cleaned out I left the side of the tower off and still off?

Now that you've got the side of the tower off, try using a torch carefully to see whether the fans on the power supply and on the CPU chip are rotating when you turn the power on. One may have failed.

When you cleaned inside the PC, did you get all of the crap out between the CPU heatsink fins?

Usually an air duster is needed to do this properly.

That wouldn't cause immediate shutdown though (i think thtas what the OP is having).
Try with 1 stick of RAM in. Or it may even be a short.

    Do you get into Windows?

Mine did this a while ago. Turned out one of the sticks of RAM had failed (I had 2 x 1GB sticks). Removing the faulty stick solved the problem.

have you got a desk fan?

while the side is off put a desk fan next to it and keep it switched on while using the PC and see if it switches off. Should be an indication of it is overheating...
(i have to do this with my oven as the internal thermostat / fan behind the dials has blown and over heats)
