PGCE Funding???

Hi, I am soooooooo confused! I am looking into doing a PGCE to teach post16 but am very confused about the bursaries offered on some PGCE - I cannot seem to find the list of subject shortages for post16 - anyone know where these are??

Thanks!!

I would contact whichever unis you are considering. I'm currently doing a PGCE getting a training bursary of £1000/mo tax-free which started in October, paid to me by my uni, but it says 'TDA salary' on the pay slip.

Depending on your LA, you might receive tuition bursaries as well. So it might be worth it contacting your LA as well and asking whether your subject is a shortage subject for post-16 in the area.

The TDA subject shortage list is here: http://www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/becomingateacher/subjects.aspx
It says secondary schools, not specifically post-16 though.

    Good luck!

Be very careful about choosing to do a post 16 PGCE as most will not give you QTS and will make it difficult (if not impossible)for you to work in schools. I've never heard of a list of shortage subjects at this level; what are you planning to teach?
  • Thanks guys - after days of searching I have finally found it - this is the link if anyone else needs it:

That's a useful link, I haven't seen that before. However, my proviso about post 16 PGCEs applies. You must be absolutely certain that you'll never want to teach in a school.

There isn't too much difference between a 16 year old at school and a 16 year old at college!

From what my dd says about the school leavers at her college, they are a bloody nightmare to deal with at that age too!

I guess you already know this, but full time teaching posts in FE can be difficult to find. Plus there seems to be more and more pemanantly on temporary contracts, if that makes sense?

I left FE teaching more than 10 years ago but totally agree with this. The days when you could go into post 16 education thinking "At least they've all chosen to go to college and actually want to be there " are long gone. There's an enormous amount of temporary contracts and many people start off as part timers. The pay is also absolutely appalling compared to school teaching and opportunities for promotion are far fewer.

Not trying to put you off, abiw, I was very happy in FE for years. Worth going in with your eyes open though. Good luck.
  • The TES forum for prospective PGCE students is really useful and has a lot of current teachers who drop in and answer questions.

I don't think the bursaries for 09/10 have been published yet - I can't find them anyway! And from the directgov website it looks like you have to wait til mid-feb to apply for student loans.
  • Thanks for all your help - "There isn't too much difference between a 16 year old at school and a 16 year old at college!" its not the 16yr olds that worry me! I wouldn't ever want to teach at a school - its def not an option for me...I only wanted to research the funding element to see if it the training was an option for me from a financial perspective.
