Solid Fuel Aga Problems

A friend has a coal fired Aga which until recently has been fine. Now when refuelling quite a lot of smoke comes out of the hotplate when the plug is removed. Is this usual but maybe not been noticed before? It seems to be running OK but a bit cooler than normal.
