Dampness

I found this site recently and need some advise please.
My house is end of terrace and every winter black mould spots appear in the upstairs bedrooms in the far corners. The heating has recently been upgraded so the rooms are now warm. This year I have taken the paper off as it was black and damp again. there is white fluffy mould growing above the skirting board on the bare plaster.
I am aware the outside is very exposed and could need repointing. Do i spend my money repointing, have the house rendered or tackle the problem from the inside.
Would welcome any help thx.0 -
I have a very similar problem. And some of the answers on here have helped a bit but any more help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. This is my first ever post so not entirely sure what I'm doing!
In our house it only happens in the bedroom. Black mould spots appear on the walls just above the skirting boards and our windows are soaking wet when we wake up in the morning. We've started to leave the windows open a little bit but the room is freezing cold. We didn't realise we had the mould until we moved some furniture and saw it behind it. When I touched the underside of the wardrobe in the room it was soaking wet. would this be caused by the same thing? the radiator is very small in this room so it is pretty cold all of the time.
Another strange thing is that any paper (letters etc) left in this room go quite soft and feel a bit weird. does this mean they are absorbing the moisture too? When we went on holiday we came back and some of my leather bags had grown mould on them and had to be thrown away - any suggestions. Should we try not to dry clothes in this room and would some sort of dehumidifier help?
we rent the flat and are getting someone to come and have a look at it but they can't come until next week and it's stressing me out! the owner had work done on the external wall of the houseand you can see about halfway uo a large roundish dark shape. it doesn't feel wet to touch but sometimes gets some mould growing on it too? Any ideas
The room is painted. Not sure about cavity wall, It's a pretty old house early 20th century at a guess. the mortar/pointing looks ok - have seen worse! the mould is small black speckles but the first time we found it it had a bit the was white a 'furry' too. I don't think the pipes or gutters are leaking.
Any suggestions welcome!0 -
Its good to know im not the only one with this issue. We too have mould growing on backs of furniture ,and on shoes and bags in bottom of wardrobe. Our end terrace is 100+ yrs old and exposed to elements. No cavity just brick and a layer of plaster between outside and in. I need to rectify this problem as these are my childrens bedrooms. Where should i spend my money? on the pointing outside or have it rendered, or deal with it inside.0

We had some rendering done and its better on that side but always open the windows for ventilation and have to run a dehumidifier too0

If i render will it fill in all the missing bits of mortar anyway? or just have it repointed? are they any quicker ways than a little trowel?
Can any one suggest a paint free render. My house would need massive amount of scaffolding and i wont want to paint it every few years.
Any suggestions very useful thanks. Not got much dosh at mo but fed up with black walls in kids bedrooms.0 -
how much should i pay for re-pointing per sq metre/yard.0
