Reclaiming PPI

I sent a letter to my loan company asking for my money back on PPI I didn't realise I was paying for. They have replied to me saying that their records show when I signed for the loan, I specifically confirmed that I require PPI, even though I didn't. It also states that they reviewed my telephone conversation, even though I done it on line, and that PPI was confirmed on the phone. This was 5 years ago and I do not remember agreeing to PPI. They have said that due to this evidence, they will not pay me back the full payment, but 'to reflect your valued customer the Group are prepared to offer you a payment of £750 as a gesture of good will without any admission of liability in full and final settlement of your complaint'.
Do you think this is them trying to fob me off so they don't have to pay the full amount I asked for, some £3,000, or do you think I should take the 'gesture'?

If so, since they have stated they have reviewed a non-existent phone call, I would send a DPA Subject Access Request and specifically mention the recording of the call. I rather think that the recording will mysteriously no longer be available0 -
Thanks - I will write to them to see if they can produce some scripts of conversations.0
