Why are motor ins. comparison sites so tricky?

Just been looking for a quote to renew our elderly Metro next month.

Started with gocompare.com - fine until I got to the occupation bit, where it had no option for retired, not working or unemployed, and wouldn't let me proceed until I had selected an occupation.

So tried confused.com - it couldn't find the vehicle even with the correct registration no. and then the make, year etc.

Finally went on moneysupermarket.com - eureka! It allowed us to be retired, and found our car straight away, just from the reg. no. Got a very good cashback quote from Swinton.

But those other sites really need to sort out these glitches. I'm posting this on the offchance that someone from them might read it and make the necessary corrections!

Gocompare.com's second page for motor insurance asks for:
    Full-time employment status
The drop down menu contains employed, self employed, retired, unemployed, full-time education, House Wife/Husband, Independent Means & Not Employed due to disability.

Oh, well maybe it was because I already had an account from last year, so just asked for an updated quote for the current year, and it populated the employment field with my husband's part time job that he had last year but doesn't have now. There didn't seem to be any way of clearing it and making a fresh start without re-registering as a new user, and as it recognised my email address I don't know how I would have got around that.

Thanks for the clarification anyway, will try again next time one of the cars needs renewing.

  • Also Confused has a drop down menu on second page of proposal which includes the provision for Retired persons.

Thanks Alan, as explained above I think the fact that I was a returning user scuppered access to that bit!
