How do you cut High Gloss kitchen units?

Hi, newbie to the forum, been reading lots of very interesting threads and hoping you guys out there can help me.

We've just ordered a new kitchen from Ikea in High Gloss Red, plan to fit it all myself (except for worktops which I'll ask an expert to do) - question I have though is that I need to make a filler piece to fill a gap at the end of the base units. I have ordered a cover panel in High Gloss Red, but the gap is only approx 60mm wide, so I plan to cut the cover panel to size to fill the gap.

However, I'm concerned about chipping/messing up the gloss finish when I cut it - does anyone know how you should cut these finishes please?

Thanks in advance
Matt

    Very Carefully!:rotfl:

Im not sure if the IKEA ones are MDF or sterling board underneath, but you should be able to do it using masking tape and a fine cut saw. Stick the masking tape on the board and mark your cut line on it. The more TPI on the saw the better. Don't rush or force the cut and you should be fine. When you have an exposed end (the bit you've just cut along) then you should seal it. Use a clear hard varnish and that should stop any flaking of the covering to your panel as well as water ingress.

    Good luck

  • me and a mate fitted his kitchen a few years ago (looked amazing if i do say so!)

He had a similar problem.. I think we used masking tape on the gloss side and used a hand saw with small teeth from the glass side..

Hopefully a pro will be along to confirm the best way!
