a girl i used to know adopted a FIV cat from Cats Protection, and they paid any vets bills relating to the FIV as long as she went to a certain vets. obviously this should be seen as a safety net rather than 'free care' as CP have to pay for it, but it certainly encourages people to adpot FIV cats - i think its great that you are willing to give a cat a lovely home where it will be happy, instead of being stuck in a cattery!! :D

her cat was fine the whole time i knew her - he had a few issues with constipation and fur balls, but he is a long haired cat so it was probably more to do with that than the FIV.

it broke my heart the time i took her to choose the cat - i wanted to take them all home!! but i have a kitty, and shes such a spoiled, grumpy little brat that i think any other car would be terrorised by her!!

Our Lucy cat is an indoors cat - when we lived in a house we used to let her into the back garden supervised, but i was so glad we had kept her as an indoor cat when we had to move to a flat!! she loves to sniff the windows when they are open on the lock - i think shes desperate to get out!! i leave windows open on the lock all the time, and in the summer if i want windows open i just lock her out of that particular room for a while!! though obvoiusly not where her litter tray and food are!! i wish i had known about the cataire website sooner - those meshes look fab!! :T

I was listening to the radio today and there was a lass on from the cats protection league saying how they really needed people in flats to take on their FIV cats and Im sure she said they paid the bills - check on that bit though

I think it's an excellent idea. I would consider if it if anything happened to my 2 - if I haven't got a garden by then.

Hi, i think its a great idea, we our rescue owner from the vets i work at is always saying how many FIV/FeLV cats she has & cant rehome, as long as they do not mix with other cats its fine.
Many rescue homes can help with costs & try & get as much from them before you take a cat home as many insurance companies will not cover anything that is or maybe related to the condition if the insurers really want to be difficult.
Many of our clients have FIV/FeLV cats & hardly take a trip to the vets apart from routine things which is great to see the cats so happy.
If you are friendly with the staff at your vets they may even agree to look after your cat if you have to go away, I know we have done & every cattery should have an isolation ward.
Hope things work out for you
    Em x:D

I just thought you'd be able to see the experiences of FIV+ cat owners.

lol no problem lilibeth. It was my fault for not reading the post properly!

I've moved into the flat now and am still considering it. There's a cat and dog shelter just down the road so I might have a wander over and enquire about it all.

I don't think I'll venture into the pens just yet though because i just know I'd take one if it looked at me with pitying eyes! (imagine puss in boots from shrek lol)
