If you look up the number on UK Phone Info, it'll tell you who provided the number. You can then contact the provider and ask them to get you added to their customer's "do not call" list, especially if you're on TPS.
I did this recently with a number that was provided by Telstra Europe, and they were great - got their customer to update their system.
Apparently, companies are legally required to check the TPS every 28 days to make sure that they have the most up to date listings.0 -
Some Panasonic DECT phones have a list facility of people that can get through.0

There is a service called "Anonymous Call Rejection" that works with CallerID, so you'd need to have that already on your phone line. It plays an announcement that you do not accept calls from anonymous numbers and invites the caller to display their number and call again. According to this web site: http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/network_codes.htm for a BT landline, the code to set it up is *227#. But it'd probably be a good idea to check it works using a mobile (and blocking your number) as well.
P.S. Just confirmed this is correct, from the BT web site: http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_sid=pAurCZfj&cat_lvl1=345&cat_lvl2=350&cat_lvl3=362&cat_lvl4=1084&p_cv=4.1084&p_cats=345,350,362,1084&p_faqid=84820 -
No - not even ACR will block callers that don't present a valid number - 0800 calls get through because the re IS a number, and Hospitals/Police stations are allowed to suppress their numbers entirely so that ACR doesn't block them. Unfortunately, overseas telcos let telemarketing firms do this too.....0

You can use a service called Choose To Refuse, this allows you to block out certain numbers, but only so many at a time, not a cheap service either.
You can use this in addition to ACR.
(Choose To Refuse not available on cable lines).
On my VoIP lines, I can without cost block anonymous numbers or any other number I like, whether UK, Abroad, Mobile etc, just by entering the number. With VoIP you get to see (if sent) what the International number is and not like with BT who mask most International calls as "International".It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

You first must subscribe to the service.
*227# Just switches it on.
#227# Switches off.
Unless you phone to cancel the service, you will still be charged for it even if you have switched it off. The reason you might switch it off (for a while) is you are expecting a call from somewhere that automatically withholds numbers, such as the local authority. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... How does the OP manage to refuse a number that's not there?
From 'Unknown' where there is NO number, then you can't, but they also asked about blocking calls from callers that do display numbers such as 0800.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
